Thinking Out Loud

friction burns + fuel change | TOLT

Well, it has been quite sometime since I created a Thinking Out Loud Thursday post with Amanda. Just a few thinks on my mind in passing this week…what better a reason to think out loud! 🙂

Thinking-Out-Loud

  • I need to chill out on the training for a couple days

As I mentioned a few times on other posts, my feet have been bothering me for the past couple weeks for various reasons…blisters and a sore right foot mostly. I took a couple days off this week with some improvement in both areas! I am letting my blister heal for a bit and am looking for alternative ways to keep my foot from rubbing so much in my new shoes. My sore right foot is from not changing my shoes to some new ones soon enough…I am not sure how long I have been wearing my “run happy” shoes (they are all named based on the FootNote on them) – I could probably look through Instagram and see an approximate start date!

**UPDATE – looks like these shoes were introduced to the running mix 17 weeks ago…yep, time for new shoes for sure!**

  • I have been eating not so great as of late – and more so on rest days when I am not working off any of the extra calories

I had a great deal of success last year with carb cycling and I think that I am going to try that eating habit again. I looked through my old MyFitnessPal entries and have some ideas of how to make a weekly menu happen. This will make meal prepping over the weekend and mid-week a lot easier. Also, from looking through all of the WIAW posts this week, I have some new meal ideas to toy with and add into the mix! I am hoping that with the more balanced meals, I will be less likely to stray to the high sugar snacks (this was a success from before)… A girl can dream!

  • I have a lot of fruit at my desk at work

This is less of an issue…more of an observation. I bring a couple pieces to work almost everyday and set them on my desk first thing. Whether or not I eat everything I brought is a different story…and that story is now told by the surplus of fruit (and 1 avocado) at my desk.

  • I am going to add a daily protein smoothie back into my routine

Along with the carb cycling, I have a lot of protein in my kitchen that needs to be used…and SOON! We don’t exactly have a big kitchen (it is QUITE small), so that extra cabinet space is needed for other things…like cups and storage containers 🙂 Plus, I can ALWAYS use a little more protein in my day to day routine!

  • Do you run with a hydration belt or vest?

I run with a Nathans hydration vest on my longer runs these days…with the weather getting warmer, I don’t want to risk getting dehydrated. Well…now that the weather is getting warmer, I am starting to have issues with friction burns. Yes, I am “used to” getting them between my legs from time to time,…but I am not used to getting them around my neck! My vest started rubbing my neck Monday morning and I have a burn on my neck – that vaguely resembles a hickey… It hurts! No one has mentioned the spot to me directly, but it is very noticeable to me… Do I just need to lube my whole body up with Body Glide (or the like) to help prevent further painful situations? Am I just wearing it wrong? Help 🙂

  • Are you running any Rock and Roll Marathon Series races?

I am heading to Dallas in a couple weeks!! It is greatly helpful that one of my dear college friends lives in the Dallas area and I can crash with her… While we are going to have to get up super early to run, it is going to be a fun weekend away! Will I see you out there?!

  • Learning from the Blog Hop!

Well, the one thing that I really learned from the *super amazing* Blog Hop with Kristy is to respect the comment 🙂 I am trying to be better about replying to comments and then checking out the blogs that made the comments and commenting…comment for a comment! It will help me continue to grow and help others as well! I am also going to try harder to go through the link-ups I add my posts to to boost those individuals as well! SHARE THE LOVE!!

How is your training going? How do you best fuel your body for running? Any odd “friction burns” to speak of? I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment and start a conversation!

  1. Carb cycling is quite difficult. So, I have to give you a credit for having a successful one in the past.
I usually run with water bottle. From Nathan as well)

  2. I’ve been focusing on eating more fruit and vegetables lately and am definitely noticing a difference in how I feel. I also do a protein shake after my workout each day because I struggle to get enough protein from regular food.

I’m also trying to be better at responding to comments! It’s like with texts – I read them, respond in my head, but never actually write out a response!!

  3. Yessss to eating great! I’ve been putting in more of an effort to get more veggies in after slacking for a bit, and it’s made a huge difference in how I feel. Not only as far as energy goes, but it’s helped me avoid those afternoon sugar cravings that always tend to hit.

  4. I love Kristy’s blog hops. I think I learned more about treasuring all the people that God has made and commenting on their blogs with care and compassion instead of trying ‘get it done.’ And it looks like you’ve gotten in some good runs this week.

  5. I can relate to not eating the greatest lately. I feel as though I’ve been all over the place with food and nutrition. I think it’s weather…at least that is what I’m going to blame. It does sound like it could be running shoe related, good luck!

  6. I was eating SO BAD and it caught up with me. Too much sugar and a night with stomach pains and I decided to cut out processed sugar and crap for 2 weeks. Immediately I felt better!
I have carried a hydration vest once when I ran 21 miles. Other than that, a handheld water bottle has been good enough for me. I have never run a RnR but they look SO FUN! For running related burns I use body glide or a thicker sock/shirt.
    I hope that helps 🙂

    1. I have been doing poorly after lunchtime…and while my day was great today, it took a nosedive after I got home from work. Still learning to listen to my body and translate the cravings… I need to make some major investments in glide 🙂

  7. Oh I forgot to buy body glide at the shops today – you reminded me!! I’ve never heard of carb cycling. But I do feel better when I eat more healthy foods. And you also reminded me I really badly need new shoes. Had that sore calf feeling I get when my shoes are done. Okay shops tomorrow!!
