I am always decorating my running gear with Brilliant Reflective. It is the easiest way to make my old tried and true gear more visible for my early morning running adventures.

BibRave Runners Safety Month

This month is the BibRave Safety Month and we are celebrating with Aftershokz and Brilliant Reflective. These two companies are go-to’s for being safe on the road, sidewalk, trail, or treadmill! While you don’t necessarily need to be reflective on the treadmill, Aftershokz bone-conduction headphones are an amazing product for you to hear your music/podcasts/movies/etc. while being aware of what is going on around you. On the roads, the combination of Aftershokz and Brilliant Reflective become even more important!

While I have been using Brilliant Reflective for a while now, this product may be new to you! I’d love to tell you a little more about what I have been using my Brilliant Reflective on, how to apply the Stick- and Iron-On varieties, and give you a chance to win a pack of Brilliant Reflective of your own!

Brilliant Reflective

There are several forms of light reflective materials and Brilliant Reflective is a Retroreflective material – which mean the light that is shined on the material returns to the original source rather than deflecting like a mirror. With this technology, the Brilliant Reflective strips are very bright and you can see the reflective elements at 300+ meters!

Pretty much every piece of gear you have or need can use extra reflective elements! The next question is which style of Brilliant Reflective is best for your gear?!

The Iron-On variety is great for your clothes – pants, tops, fleece sweatshirts, some jackets, gloves, etc. For the remainder of your gear and items that cannot be heat up with the iron, the Stick-On variety would be best – rain jacket, animal collar/leash, footwear, hat, bike, helmet, running stroller, and hydration pack. These are just the several various pieces I have added Brilliant Reflective elements to. 

Now that you know WHAT you can add Brilliant Reflective Safety Strips to, let’s go over HOW to apply them! First, pick out the gear that you would like to add Brilliant Reflective to! I have a couple jackets that I will be testing along with you.

Brilliant Reflective | Iron-On

Break out the counter top or ironing board and iron for this application! While the ironing board is optional, the iron is pretty important. Next, you will want to test the material of your garment. I have found that if the material content has a significant amount of polyester, the iron can “melt” the material or leave a shiny area where the iron was pressed. For these materials, the Stick-On variety may be a better option.

If you haven’t already, go ahead and open up your Brilliant Reflective package. The inside labels show different placements and materials to put the strips on! You can then decide where to put the strips on your gear! Using the following biomotion placement guides can help people recognize you as a runner on the road :

Lay out your garment and Brilliant Reflective placements!

Once you are happy with the placement of Brilliant Reflective on your garment, you can start the ironing process. Place a light towel or paper towel over the Brilliant Reflective strips and apply the iron with pressure for 30-40 seconds. Once you are done with the first strip, you can move on to the next and next, until you have pressed all the strips.

All the strips to cool (which takes just a few seconds) and remove the top plastic layer. 

Be sure to put the strips on the front, back, and sides (or sleeves) of your gear so you can be seen first from any direction! 

I was sure happy to be able to test the purple Iron-On Brilliant Reflective so my old crazy colored 1/4 zip – the strips blend in with normal light and shine BRIGHT with a beam of light.

Brilliant Reflective | Stick-On

For the rest of my gear, I use the Stick-On Brilliant Reflective strips! There are a couple differences in the strips :

• there is no top plastic layer
• no iron needed!
• there is a backing that must be removed 

Similar to the Iron-On strips, you should prep your work area, open your Brilliant Reflective package, and decide which strips you want to go where on your gear!

Once you have outlined your gear/strips, you can start application. Peel off the backing and firmly press the reflective strips to your garment or gear.

Again, repeat on the front, back, and sides (or sleeves) of your gear so you can be seen first from any direction the light is coming from!
