Hawk100 w15 | training for 100M

Things are always busy in our house…and got a little busier going forward…

I wouldn’t qualify myself as “stressed out” but my days are full. Full from before dawn until 5pm or so with a little wiggle-room in the evening for some revolving tasks at home and/or time for fun. Wednesday was an “eventful” day that is now adding some new tasks to my morning and evening…can I just have a little more time in the day?!

Big thoughts, plans, and decisions to make this coming week that relates to my crewing and pacing of the Hawk – tough decisions indeed…

Let’s recap!

weekly workouts : week 15 (july 30)

Monday
Scheduled : OFF
Actual : 4 miles

Even though I decided to repeat last week, I had an itch to run outside of my scheduled miles. A beautiful afternoon was very welcoming to get outside and go for a run!

Tuesday
Scheduled : 8 miles
Actual : 8 miles

I am not completely sure how it happened, but I went for my first morning run in a LONG TIME. As I mentioned last week, I have been working early hours and morning runs would be even earlier if I squeezed them in…but today was one of those mornings where I was a little more lax on the work start time. I ran a few miles, then met up with my runner buddy (hello accountability!) for a few more, and then took the pup out for the last sprint ♥

Wednesday
Scheduled : 6 miles
Actual : 3.2 miles

Even though I planned to get out and get a few miles before my early start at work, I didn’t get out QUITE as early as I wanted. I was able to squeeze in 3.2 miles before heading into work. I packed up my lunch run bag to head out for a refreshing afternoon late morning trail break…

Instead, I needed to take our sweet Barley Bear to the vet. He has been losing weight and the litter box clean up yesterday was interesting… After some blood work and urinalysis, we found out he has developed feline diabetes. While not what anyone would want to hear, at least we know and can start a treatment plan… Good thing I went in to work early today, because we were at the vet for nearly 3.5 hours. Several hundred dollars lighter and a bag full of new food, insulin, and antibiotics (oh yes, he also has a UTI at the moment,..) later, we are hopefully on the road to recovery (and a new norm).

Thursday
Scheduled : 6 miles
Actual : 3 miles + 3 miles

Start of a new day and a trial run… Since I am working some extra hours during the week (to help cover the time I am gone on Friday’s), my running has taken a major hit. I either need to wake up EVEN EARLIER to get in the miles before my shift, run not-quite-enough-miles over lunch, and/or run with little man in tow after work. Today, I decided to see how running the 3 miles to work first thing, working a few hours, and then the 3 miles home would work out…and it wasn’t all that bad! I was able to get my miles in, get little man around on time, get the kitties fed and Barley shot up with meds – all before heading back to work for the rest of the day.

Friday
Scheduled : 6 miles
Actual : OFF

No big excuses…just lots of little ones. I DID get up early enough to get in the miles before leaving town for the day…but then my bags wouldn’t have been packed, dishes wouldn’t have been done, and laundry wouldn’t have been switched out. I could have run in the afternoon, but I was with my parents quite a bit of the time…and that time is always more important. I could have run in the evening, but I made plans with little man (and my sister) to check out the JOCO fair – and then to go say hello to my girlfriends after their dinner date… It was a FULL day. The only way I would have been able to run was before 3am or after midnight…and it just didn’t happen!

Saturday
Scheduled : 20 miles
Actual : 22 miles

It’s the Lawrence Trail Hawks Birthday Run Day!

More trail time, yes…please! I was able to get through 5 birthday loops before my day was done. I stuck around for a few hours for the Hawk naming (which I need a name) but it was getting late, so I needed to go. For whatever reason, my face (eyes mostly) reacts badly to being on those trails anymore…I think I need to start an allergy regime before the race to be sure I can see and my eyes aren’t bloodshot when I finish…

Yes, those are road shoes that I wore on the trails on Saturday. Not my finest moment…but got it done! Probably why my feet/ankles are hurting now on Sunday…

Sunday
Scheduled : 20 miles
Actual : 10 miles

I had every opportunity to get this run in EARLY…but my sleep took priority. So after spending the afternoon with little man, I was able to head to the gym (cooler and less bugs – and humidity) to get in the miles. I was feeling good and working my way through the miles when my ankle started to bother me. Yes, I know that things are going to HURT during my 100 miler and I should embrace it, but I don’t want to injure myself if I don’t have to.

I opted to cut down my workout and just be happy that this week is done and I was able to put in a good effort!

Weekly Miles : 53 miles (should have been 72…whomp)
100m Training Miles : 859 miles
Annual Miles : 1508 miles (goal = 2,018 in 2018)

  1. I’m so sorry about your Barley Bear! It’s so hard when our furbabies are sick. 😦 I’m glad you got a diagnosis and meds and can work towards a new, healthy normal. My baby kitty (as if she’s a baby. She’s totally 8 years old. LOL) recently had teeth extracted and she’s down to just 2 left. YES! Seriously!! She has feline resorptive disease, poor thing. Anyway, her new normal is wet food and some fancy soft treats because she can’t chew hard things anymore. That wasn’t a cheap process either.

I think that, given everything you had going on, 53 miles is definitely a good week! I know you’re probably stressing over it but things/life happens and sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. You still logged quite a few miles and managed a solid back to back run even if the second one was shorter than planned. I do hope your ankle issues are feeling better though!

    1. Thanks Jen! I thought it might be his teeth…he was eating “weird” and we put him on soft food before taking him to the vet. Our other kitty is now enjoying the soft food as he can’t have it anymore. Our animals are surely our babies – just getting baby-ed a little more from now on ☺️☺️

  2. I admit I’m often lax on the work starting line when I run in the mornings…even when I get up early enough. Those endorphins kick in and I want to do too much around the house before I leave for work! I know you wanted more miles this week, but playing it smart with the ankle and getting the rest you need are also key to making it to that start line. I hope your Barley Bear is feeling better. Thanks for linking!
