running virtually anywhere | Hospital Hill Run

Disclaimer: I received free entry to Hospital Hill races as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

My experiences running Hospital Hill events have changed greatly through the years! From being my first postpartum event (not the greatest experience), to a redemption race weekend (amazing weekend of running), my first HHR half marathon as a pacer, and now my 4th year running as a BibRave Pro!

This year has brought a lot of changes to both my running and racing plans — as has pretty much everyones PLANS.

Firstly, most races since March have been cancelled, postponed, or moved to virtual events. Like the Hospital Hill run, many in-person races have opted to be virtual so it’s runners can still run (on their own) and receive their race swag.

But unlike other events, the team over at Hospital Hill HQ has gone several steps further to engage with their runners. There is a Hospital Hill Facebook page where runners can connect and challenges have been set up throughout the past couple months to keep registrants engaged and excited to run their events. These extra steps have sure been fun to follow along with!

Check out these fun Virtual Challenges!

Since the Hospital Hill events are virtual, they have also modified the “race timeline”. This weekend is when the live event would have taken place — but virtual runners have until the first of July to submit their results!

New for 2020

Since 2020 wasn’t already interesting enough, my body decided to throw me yet another curve ball. Back in 2016, I got sick with the flu — which then threw my immune system into overdrive and literally destroyed my thyroid function. In January of this year, the flu was running rampant at my work and I caught it as well… I believe this is what caused my immune system to go crazy again and spurred whatever inflammatory condition I have been battling since February-March sometime. What started as some residual soreness in the early days has now transformed into major joint pain everyday since this quarantine started… I had one “good day” a few days ago but no telling why I wasn’t in pain THAT ONE day — and horrible pain the days before and after.

While this isn’t meant to be a pity party post, I am just giving just a snapshot background into why this years Hospital Hill Half Marathon will be yet another interesting one… I am told that movement helps with inflammation conditions but running regularly has fallen to the wayside a while back. Family walks and lunch walk/runs to the school are all I have the gumption to do these days. So a timed half marathon isn’t my highest priority when it comes to my ongoing health issues.

Due to Hospital Hill being a virtual event, I am going to make the most of it! I am planning on getting out EARLY for a “loop” with the pup and then more “loops” as the morning progresses and the family starts to become active. Since the big kid will be in Kansas City with his grandparents, my idea to have him bike with me is not going to work. But a loop or two (or three) with the little in his stroller will hopefully work out!

What will 2020 truly bring?! Who knows…

Do you have a race that you come back to year after year?

I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment and start a conversation!
