While I wished we had a fall season this year, it just isn’t happening. The winter cold is upon us and the chill is seemingly unrelenting. Here are my current top five cold weather running essentials!

winter is here – winter weather must haves

1) Vaseline

I use Vaseline…a lot. While most of my usage is in the summer or warmer months, I use it quite a bit in the colder months as well!

The place I use Vaseline the most in the winter is on my face. Yeah, my face! The gel keeps my skin from getting chapped and raw from the cold. Yeah, it is a little cold at first when heading out…but you get used to it and your cheeks will thank you come springtime!

2) Turtle Gloves

I am all about the function when it comes to gloves. I was gifted a pair of turtle gloves last winter (with the referral from a friend) and they are great!

When it is super cold, my hands go numb in regular gloves – so mittens are a must.

The perk of these mittens are that they are “convertible” – you can wear them down over your fingers when you are cold, and fold them back over your hand when you warm up!

3) layers, layers, layers

While this one is a little more arbitrary, bulking up with a few lighter layers helps me keep warm in the beginning of a run and shed layers as I warm up.

If all I wear is a heavy coat and I get hot, there isn’t much flexibility in what I am wearing…

Similar to the gloves (#3 above) – convertible layers are also a great addition to winter gear!

4) hat or visor

Ice cold wind can be horrible to run through. By wearing a hat with a brim or visor, you can block the wind and feel more comfortable in the elements.

5) BUFFⓇ ThermoNet™ hat & multifunctional headwear

If you follow me on social media, you would see that I love wearing a BUFFⓇ  multifunctional headwear during most of my running adventures.

One of the new materials that BUFFⓇ  came out with this year is the ThermoNet™. I was given the opportunity to try and test out the Crash Berry color of both the wrap and hat!

Since the chill has been unrelenting, I have used my BUFFⓇ ThermoNet™ Hat and/or multifunctional headwear for most of my morning runs.

The lightweight hat goes perfect with my visor (see #4 above) to keep the cold off my face and head. Similarly, I also use the wrap as a neck gator or headscarf most days.

While the material feels thin and breathable, the durable PrimaLoft® yarn is said to be four times warmer than regular microfiber! The material wicks moisture away from my skin while keeping me comfortable in mild to cold weather conditions.

Ways to wear the BUFFⓇ ThermoNet™ multifunctional headwear

I have been wearing my BUFFⓇ ThermoNet™ multifunctional headwear for more than a few weeks now, and I love them! Whether I need something to break the chill for the first part of a 50 degree run, or more coverage for longer times in the cold, the ThermoNet™ gear has been great!

My longest trek in the cold was last weekend’s Kansas Half Marathon. I was matchy-matchy with my skirt – I needed to bring some PURPLE to Lawrence ; )

The BUFFⓇ ThermoNet™ multifunctional headwear is perfect for those days that I want to wear my hair in a top-knot (which is most days…).
