Let’s just put this out there…I WISH I could travel to Hawaii to run the Hapalua Half on April 5th but the financial side just isn’t going to work out this year.

There are so many reasons it would be great to travel and run the largest half marathon in Hawaii…but I will limit myself to five!

Top 5 Reasons to run the Hapalua Half Marathon

1 — Helloooo…we are talking about Hawaii

I am not big on traveling far from home…it’s not that I don’t want to, I just never have the time or money. #reallife

I would love to just hop on a plane (or few, let’s be real) and go somewhere warm and beautiful for a week after a mix-match winter in the middle of the USA. Bring on sunshine and sandy beaches!! Just add running and my adventure is set!

2 swag on point

Are you really a runner if you don’t like a little swag? I’m not talking about just a finishers medal… From the sounds of it, you will make it out of Hawaii with :

  • a commemorative race shirt
  • a race tote bag
  • finisher medal
  • finish line video of your finish (shown on the big screen in finisher village and later posted on YouTube)

Not to mention the post-race party with entertainment (also on course) and fresh-made post-race food including malasadas and shade ice…yuuuuum! You won’t be able to take those tasty treats back stateside, but can sure enjoy it after your run!

3 uhhhhhh…Hawaii, and volunteers!

Other than being on the beautiful Waikiki Island for the event, you will also experience :

  • on course entertainment
  • water & energy drink stations approx. every 2 miles
  • on-course medical stations
  • chip timing – tracking available through the event app
  • amazing volunteers throughout!!

“This was my first half marathon.
I’m very thankful for all of the volunteers
that made this work. Very good set up,
well placed water and medical points,
and a great safe route. I had a blast!!!”
— Johnny Strickland

4 great course

Other than the aforementioned on-course refreshments and entertainment, the Hapalua Half is MOSTLY a flat course. From what I read, around mile 9 is where the elevation adds up…and FAST.

As you venture up, down and around Diamond Head, you are ushered towards the finish with aid stations and entertainment — which makes the quad burn all the more manageable… Be sure to add some hillwork to your training plan!

5 Racecation to the max!

Did I mention the Hapalua Half is in HAWAII?! Maybe several times…but it is ALWAYS worth mentioning!

I would totally plan on making this destination race a total racecation for the hubs and myself with extra time for cocktails along the water’s edge, long walks on the beach, and certainly need to hit up the local eateries! The hubs is a big fan of SPAM…so he will fit right in 😉
